Log into github.com and navigate to "Your profile" link in the upper right. Once you're on "Your profile", click on the tab that says "Repositories". Then click the green "New" button. Call it "interactive". This repository will be the home for all of your web-based projects and workshops for this summer.
When you do this, it will take you to a screen that gives you instructions on how to set it up. Click the green button "Set up in Desktop".
Pressing this button should launch the Github application you downloaded before. (If for some reason this doesn't happen: Open the GitHub Desktop application manually on your computer. Log in using your new GitHub account. Press the "+" button in the upper left hand corner and navigate to the "Clone" tab. As long as you are logged in, your "interactive" repository should show up. Select it and then press the button "Clone interactive".)
Copy the above code. Paste it into your new file. Replace the content between the title tags (in the head part of the document) and between the h1 tags (in the body part of the document) with your name. Then save it as "index.html" within the local folder you specified in the last step. This will become your class homepage, so you can do whatever you want here. You can always come back to edit it later.
Go back to your Github application. You’ll see some empty boxes, one that says "Summary" and the other that says "Description". In the summary, summarize what you just did. You might say something like "initial commit" or "hello world". If you want to say more, type it in description, but this is optional. Then press the "Commit" button.
Go back to github.com. Return to your profile by clicking in the upper right hand corner. Click on the "Repositories" tab and then click on your repository ("interactive"). Then click on the button that says "branch master" and type to create a new branch called "gh-pages".
While you’re still on the "interactive" repository page on github.com, click the settings button in the right hand column. Change the default branch to the one you just created, "gh-pages". Press "Update". You will then have to press "I understand…" to confirm.
